The TLS CERTIFICATE
Hacking, fraud, scams: browsing unsecured websites is not without risk!
All data, confidential or not, such as passwords or credit card numbers, travelling between your computer and a website can easily be intercepted and exploited by a third party. To prevent this, data encryption has become essential: web browsers such as Chrome promote it, and Google also takes it into account in its rankings. Encryption protects your data and makes everything going in and out of your site unreadable to an intruder.
This encryption relies on an encryption certificate, formerly known as an “SSL certificate” and now as a “TLS certificate”. It shows your customers that you take security seriously, thanks to the HTTPS mode and padlock displayed in the browser. Your site thus earns the trust of search engines and visitors alike.
What is HTTPS?
HTTP stands for “Hypertext Transfer Protocol”. The HTTP protocol carries requests from clients to servers and files from servers to clients (web pages, multimedia content and so on). HTTPS (with an S for Secure) wraps HTTP in a TLS layer, which encrypts the data exchanged. That data is encrypted and technically unreadable throughout its journey between the client and the server.
The benefits of switching to HTTPS
TLS certification has become essential for search engine optimisation. The new version of Google Chrome, Chrome 68, now requires HTTPS for all page content. All sites still on HTTP will be flagged as not secure!
Why switch to HTTPS?
When you browse websites the traditional way, i.e. over http:// without encryption, many weak points (public Wi-Fi, an infected device on the network, etc.) can give intruders the opportunity to capture the data in transit.
Whether it is your holiday photos, a contact form, your passwords or indeed any information exchanged with the websites you visit, this data could potentially be read by a hacker taking advantage of an unsecured connection.
To prevent this and protect you, internet standards have evolved: SSL/TLS encryption is becoming the norm. It makes any intercepted data unreadable to intruders on the network. In practice, using SSL/TLS on websites means that http:// requests become https://.
Besides securing your data, search engines are starting to favour HTTPS content, browsers warn users about non-HTTPS sites, and users are well aware of it. That is why you should not miss the boat: make the switch without delay!
SSL/TLS certificates used to be paid for, but a simple certificate that effectively encrypts your data is now free, thanks to the Let's Encrypt certificate authority.
What does switching to HTTPS involve?

- Affordable, or even free
