Cartridge backups: the RDX case

Meeting a customer's needs:

A customer came to us needing an easy way to export a backup of their data to a durable medium, offline, automatically and on a regular basis. To comply with their disaster recovery plan (DRP), this customer needed a backup stored offline (i.e. disconnected from the network), on a reliable medium and, above all, at a different site from their server (so outside our datacentre) and from their production facilities (their premises).

We responded quickly by setting up a backup system based on RDX cartridges, with weekly rotation over a month, all managed by our team. For the customer, the solution met the requirements of their DRP while being maintained by a team they trust: us.

What is RDX?

HP RDX cartridge

–Simple-
RDX combines the simplicity of tape backup with the speed and flexibility of a hard drive. The compact internal or external drives take pocket-sized cartridges. Each cartridge is a rugged miniature hard drive.
-Fast–
RDX is designed for fast data transfers. With capacities ranging from 500 GB to several TB per cartridge, you have enough room to back up your entire server, ensuring complete protection of your data and its instant availability. Writing is fast, and so is restoring the backup. There is none of the rewind delay of tape systems. Access is almost instantaneous, so you can work directly with the data on the cartridge, just as you would with any other hard drive.
–Rugged-
The drives are robust, and the cartridges are shock-resistant and tough enough to last more than 10 years – knocks and drops do not mean data loss. What is more, your valuable data can be protected by strong encryption, giving you complete peace of mind.
-Portable–
The cartridges are small and tough, so you can easily store and/or transport them. You can keep them off-site for archiving or use them to transfer data to another computer or server.
